Family Tree Maker uses the different file formats and icons, depending on how you save your files to your pc the files and their icons will appear in a folder or on your hard drive or desktop.
.FTW Files
The blue icon denotes an .FTW file. This is the standard Family File extension and all Family Files you create will have this extension. This is the file you work with and is the one that opens each time you start Family Tree Maker.
.FBK Files
This is the file extension for backup files. Every time you close the program (or open a new file), Family Tree Maker will automatically make a backup copy of your current Family File using this file extension.
