Family Tree Maker uses different file formats and icons, depending on how you save your files to your pc the files, and their icons will appear in a folder or on your hard drive or desktop.


.FTW Files

The .FTW File Icon


The blue icon denotes an .FTW file. This is the standard Family File extension and all Family Files you create will have this extension. This is the file you work with and is the one that opens each time you start Family Tree Maker.




.FBK Files

The .FBK File Icon


The red .FBK icon denotes a backupfile. FBK is the file extension for backup files. Every time you close the program (or open a new file), Family Tree Maker will automatically make a backup copy of your current Family File using this file extension.




.FBC Files

The .FBC File Icon


The red .FBC icon denotes a compressed backup file. FBC is the file extension for compressed backup files. This is used to create backups on a floppy disk. To create this type of file is very simple, from the File menu, select Backup Family File. Note; Although .FBK and .FBC icons are both red they are different file formats




.GED Files

The GEDCOM File Icon


The tree icon denotes a GEDCOM file, GED is the file extension for GEDCOM files. GEDCOM is the standard file format for exchanging information between genealogy programs and uploading to internet sites.
