Family Tree Maker uses multiple file formats. Each one has its own specific file extension and assosciated icon.

The extensions and icons are shown below.

By default Windows does not show file names with their file extensions, if you wish to display file extensions but are unsure how to do so then follow the link; Show File Extensions

.FTW Files

The .FTW File Icon

The blue icon denotes an .FTW file. All Family Files you create will have this extension.

This is the file you work with and is the one that opens each time you start Family Tree Maker.

.FBK Files

The .FBK File Icon

.FBK is the file extension for backup files. These are denoted by a red .FBK icon.

Every time you close the program (or open a new file), Family Tree Maker will automatically make a backup copy of your current Family File using this file extension.

.FBC Files

The .FBC File Icon

.FBC is the file extension for compressed backup files. This can be used to create backups on media where space is limited i.e. floppy disks.

To create this type of file, from the File menu select Backup Family File.

Note; Although .FBK and .FBC icons are both red they are different file formats

.GED Files

The GEDCOM File Icon

.GED is the file extension for GEDCOM files and can be identified by the tree icon.

GEDCOM is the standard file format for exchanging information between genealogy programs and uploading to internet sites.
