In the North West of England, its boundary to the west is the Irish Sea and to the east, the Pennines and Yorkshire.
It takes its name from the city of Lancaster where the infamous Pendle Witches stood trial in 1612 at Lancaster Castle. Formerly a centre for cotton manufacture, the traditional crafts along with its 'dark satanic mills' have been replaced by more modern and varied industries. Children's author Beatrix Potter lived on the county's northern border at Hill Top Farm, near Sawrey, until her death in 1943. |
|
The county has undergone numerous boundary changes over the years. A summary of these can be found here.
