The oldest wooden Church in the country 17thC Greenstead Church in Ongar submitted by HelenBell

Essex

County town: Chelmsford

Other major towns: Ilford, Southend-on-Sea, West Ham

A county that was somewhat bigger than it is now, the west side having been absorbed into Greater London. A fairly flat county with several rivers cutting deeply into it, hence a popular area for sailing. Essex sailing barges used to carry goods into the capital and up the coast, and sailing barge races are still held annually. Originally a mainly agricultural county, with both arable and animal farming but now acts mainly as a dormitory for London. Southend-on-Sea and Clacton-on-Sea were popular Bank Holiday destinations from the East End of London.

Gustav Holst composed "The Planets Suite" in Essex.
