Lancashire

County town: Lancaster

Other major towns: Liverpool, Manchester, Bolton

In the North West of England, its boundaries to the west is the Irish Sea and to the East, the Pennines and Yorkshire. It takes its name from the city of Lancaster where the infamous Pendle Witches stood trial in 1612 at Lancaster Castle. Formerly a centre for cotton manufacture, the traditional crafts along with its 'dark satanic mills' have been replaced by more modern and varied industries.

Children's author Beatrix Potter lived on the county's northern border at Hill Top Farm, near Sawrey, until her death in 1943.

The county has undergone numerous changes over the years.

A summary of these can be found here.

As part of the UKBMD volunteer project, the county of Lancashire has searchable bmd index direct links to online certificate ordering from the Lancs Registation District main office at Preston.

To order a certificate you need to find the entry in the Lancs bmd index and use the local index reference number
