[[Image:adams edwards.jpg]] Adams Edwards was in born in Plymouth in 1825, the son of Adams Edwards and Susan Helmer. His mother died when he was still a baby. Family legend had it that he was brought up by an "Aunt Halma". This turned out to be Ann Hele Helmer, his mother's sister. Close examination of the 1841 census reveals, however that he was living just round the corner in Plymouth from his step mother: Jane Jago Edwards nee Phelps. His father was a Lieutenant RN (Not an admiral, as family legend had insisted!) and joined the coastguard service in the 1830s. Yet another legend, still unproved, is that Adams trained as a surgeon but killed his first patient on the operating table and decided to become a chemist instead. He moved to North Devon and acquired premises in Bideford.
