*[http://maps.cheshire.gov.uk/tithemaps/ Tithe Maps] This is a fantastic resource. You can search by surname of owner or tenant, by placename etc. Try the advanced search. You can also show side by side maps of the 1836 tithe maps against OS maps from various dates including now and aerial photographs. You can also overlay colour coding for owners, tenants and for usage of the land. It's not complete but it's being updated regularly and is well worth a look. Many areas are covered already.

Cheshire

County town: Chester.

Other major towns: Historically Birkenhead, Wallasey, Stockport. In later years Macclesfield, Crewe and Warrington

Famous for its sandstone hills and the large plain, Cheshire was an agricultural area famous for milk and cheese production. Salt mines were started in 1682, other local industries being the leather trade and charcoal production.

Chester is famous for its Roman ruins as well as its Tudor heritage seen in its black and white timbered buildings. Attractions in Chester include a city wall which is nearly complete, the River Dee and the Zoo.

The footballer Joe Mercer was born in Ellesmere Port.

The county has undergone numerous changes over the years.

A summary of these can be found here.
