County Leitrim has a short length of coastline but is a mostly inland County with hills, lofty mountains and deep valleys. Divided into North and South Leitrim by the river Shannon and Lough Allen, the county town, Carrick-on-Shannon, is the largest town in Leitrim. The county was very badly affected by the Great Famine of 1845-49.
