Roxburgh

Both the village of Roxburgh and Roxburgh Parish Church may suprise people, many expect to find a larger settlement and church. Old Roxburghe was not only a Royal Burgh but in the 13th century was reputedly the fourth most important and populated town in Scotland. Several times Roxburghe passed between the English and Scots amid bloody battles until after one Scottish victory in 1460 the castle and town were razed to the ground.
Present day Roxburgh is a (comparitively) recent village standing some distance from old Roxburghe, the church is late 17th century (possibly slightly later). The church building sits centrally in the village and the kirkyard surrounding the building has both burial vaults and headstones, many early stones feature carved skulls and bones, some with dates and some without, several are found within the walls of the "T" shaped church.
