Skillings with Norfolk roots. They are all descended from a single man Edmund Skillings, born in Edgefield Norfolk in 1722 who died in Cley.
Devon roots:
Adams in Malborough
Adams Edwards was in born in Plymouth in 1825, the son of Adams Edwards and Susan Helmer. His mother died when he was still a baby. Family legend had it that he was brought up by an "Aunt Halma". This turned out to be Ann Hele Helmer, his mother's sister. Close examination of the 1841 census reveals, however that he was living just round the corner in Plymouth from his step mother: Jane Jago Edwards nee Phelps. His father was a Lieutenant RN (Not an admiral, as family legend had insisted!) and joined the coastguard service in the 1830s. Yet another legend, still unproved, is that Adams trained as a surgeon but killed his first patient on the operating table and decided to become a chemist instead. He moved to North Devon and acquired premises in Bideford.

Chestnut cottage on a visit to Shamley Green, Surrey in the early 1980s
The Horne family standing outside Chestnut Cottage circa 1903. On the back row are Matilda Horne nee Edwards and Catherine Annie Horne (Kitty, b 1891). The children in the front row are Edith (Edie, b 1895) William Edwin (Ted, b 1893) Charles (Charlie, b 1896) and Ellen Frances (Nell, b 1899)
And this is the same family on the occasion of Kitty's 21st birthday. Father is William Horne. By this time the family had moved to Barnet Lane, as can be seen from the Valuation Office book for Wonersh. William held his cottage rent free from Mr Cowley Lambert. The children all married in the 1920s. William and Matilda continued to live in Barnett Lane until 1940. They celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary there, then went to live in Lexden, Essex with their daughter Nell and son-in-law Bob Kirkham. William died later in 1940 and Matilda in 1944.
