Balmerino

Norman arches and barrel vaults are clearly visible in the ruins of Balmerino Abbey. The remains of the buildings now standing are only a small part of the original 13th century abbey founded in 1229 by Lady Ermengarde (great grand daughter of William the Conqueror). Her body was reputedly laid to rest here in 1234, but when the ruined buildings were being robbed of stone for construction of nearby houses and farm buildings, the tombstone and contents of the tomb were disturbed and scattered.
