County Leitrim has a short length of coastline but is a mostly inland County with hills, lofty mountains and deep valleys. Divided into North and South Leitrim by the river Shannon and Lough Allen, The county town, Carrick-on-Shannon, is largest town in Leitrim. The county was very badly affected by the Great Famine of 1847-47.
