On the border with Wales the county of Shropshire is bisected by the river Severn.

Home to probably the most famous bridge in the country and Ironbridge the world’s first iron bridge at 196 feet in length, straddling a gorge across the river Severn.

Charles Darwin was born in Shrewsbury and there is a statue of him in the library gardens.

County town: Shrewsbury

In 1770 Richard Gough wrote 'The History of Myddle' which relates the daily activities of the ordinary people who lived there. On genuk.org there is a list of the people who appear in the book.
