Old Machar
St Machar Cathedral is a 14th century building. The founding of the first church during the 6th century is depicted in the "St Machar" window. Built originally as a fortified kirk, evidence of which includes several small windows instead of one larger panel (visible inside the West gate) and the twin towers have walls thick enough to contain spiral staircases to the upper floors and feature battlements at the towerheads, the spires visible today replaced small "cape houses". Perhaps not suprisingly for a building of this age there have been other changes to the building, the greatest of these probably being the central tower (now long gone) and the ruinious transepts at the east end of the Cathedral.
