A low-lying county in East Anglia, famous for its Broads, turkeys and big blue skies! Norfolk was also the birthplace of one of our greatest heroes: Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson. He was born in the quiet village of Burnham Thorpe situated close to Burnham Market which has been described as the 'Chelsea on Sea' of Norfolk. The county town of Norfolk is Norwich which has a cathedral and a Castle. Norwich Castle was once a prison and between its gateposts was the site of the scaffold, where many Norfolk felons paid the ultimate price for their crimes. North Norfolk beaches are spectacular.
Gwyneth Paltrow was shown walking across the vast, golden, Holkham beach at the end of the film Shakespeare in Love.

Interactive Historic Maps Website – Norfolk E-Map Explorer from Norfolk County Council

Norfolk E-Map Explorer is a free-to-use website that provides on-line access to digitised aerial photographs and historical maps of Norfolk. Anyone with an interest in the history of their parish, or Norfolk in general will find the site illuminating. The website provides access to images of tithe, enclosure and 1st Edition Ordnance Survey maps, and aerial photographs taken in 1946 and 1988

With E-Map Explorer, you can see how your parish has changed over time. It allows you to view the original 19th century parish tithe maps, and also to compare these maps with the more recent maps and photographs. You can zoom in on areas of interest, pan around the maps and for close comparison overlay one map or photograph on another. The site does not need a high-speed connection and can be accessed through a standard dial-up connection.

Since its launch, Norfolk E-Map Explorer has proved to be very popular with users. Much of the feedback that we get comes from those with an interest in local history and we have found that it has proved to be a valuable resource to serious local historians as well as those with a more casual interest. The information provided with the maps allows users of E-Map Explorer to draw on the site as part of wider research.

In May 2005, the site was awarded and ‘Alan Ball Local History Award’, from the Library Services Trust. And in October 2006 the site was a runner up in the Channel 4 Television Awards category at the British Archaeological Awards.
